Not in the trash. Not in the blue bin. A cell crushed in a compactor or punctured on a sorting belt enters thermal runaway: it heats itself, vents, and ignites with no outside spark.

The bill is public. Fires at recycling and scrap facilities across the US and Canada caused roughly $2.5 billion in damage during 2025 across 448 reported incidents, according to Resource Recycling. Batteries did not start all of them, but enough that loose cells are now the most predictable hazard in the waste stream.

Also worth dropping: opening a pack to get at the cells, dunking a battery in water to “kill” it, and letting loose cells rattle in a drawer.

How To Properly Dispose Of Lithium Batteries, Step By Step

It takes about two minutes.

  • Power down and remove. Take the battery out if it is designed to come out. If it is sealed in, recycle the whole unit.
  • Tape the terminals. Electrical or packing tape over each contact prevents the short circuit behind most disposal fires.
  • Bag each cell separately. One battery per bag, so nothing touches anything else.
  • Keep it cool and dry until drop-off. A garage shelf is fine. A hot car is not.
  • Find a collection point that takes lithium. Plenty of stores accept alkalines and refuse lithium, so check before you drive.

How To Recycle Lithium Batteries, And What Happens Next

Collection is the hard part. Once a cell reaches a recycler, the processing is well established and runs on one of two main routes.

Pyrometallurgy smelts the material at high heat to pull out cobalt and nickel. It is the proven option, it is energy intensive, and most of the lithium is lost to the slag. Hydrometallurgy leaches the metals out with acids or solvents at much lower temperatures and recovers lithium far more effectively, at the cost of chemical waste streams that have to be treated afterwards. A third route, direct recycling, is still mostly at pilot scale: rather than break the cathode down into separate metals, it reconditions the material and returns it to a new cell.

This is where the commercial argument sits. Lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite all appear on the US critical minerals list, so every recovered pack is supply nobody has to mine, ship, and clear through customs again.

How To Get Rid Of Lithium Batteries When You Are the Brand

Here is the part consumer guides skip. Sell an e-bike, a cordless tool, or anything with a pouch cell in it, and your customer’s disposal question becomes your operations question. Returns arrive. Units swell on the rack. A recall lands, and two thousand suspect packs need somewhere an ordinary warehouse cannot legally offer.

That capacity is scarce. Fewer than 500 facilities nationwide hold permits for damaged lithium-ion batteries, InvestigateTV found in its review of federal hazardous waste records. Most 3PLs read their insurance policy and decline the category, usually four weeks into onboarding.
